Declutter and downsize: Get rid of unwanted items before you move. This will save you money on moving costs, packing supplies, and space in your new home. You can sell items online or have a garage sale, or donate them to charity.
Decluttering before moving
DIY packing and moving: If you’re on a tight budget, consider packing and moving yourself. You can rent a truck or trailer, and borrow or buy packing supplies. Be sure to ask friends and family for help with lifting heavy furniture.
Get multiple moving quotes: If you do decide to hire a moving company, be sure to get quotes from several different companies before making a decision. Negotiate the price and be sure to understand all of the fees involved.
Move during the off-season: Moving companies typically charge less during the off-season (between September and April). If you’re flexible with your moving date, consider moving during this time to save money.
Use free or recycled packing materials: You can save money on packing supplies by using free or recycled materials. Ask friends and family for used boxes, or check with local businesses for boxes they are discarding. You can also use towels, blankets, and clothes to pack fragile items.
