One of the first questions we get from clients moving to Chattanooga isn’t about property taxes or zoning—it’s “Where should we go for dinner?”
The Scenic City has quietly become a serious foodie destination in the South. From James Beard Award nominees to hole-in-the-wall burger joints, here are a few of our absolute favorites that you need to try.
1. The “Date Night” Spots
Perfect for celebrating closing day or an anniversary.
- Alleia (Southside): If you ask five locals their favorite restaurant, three of them will say Alleia. It’s rustic Italian in a beautiful old brick building. Pro Tip: Order the bacon-wrapped dates and the braised short rib.
- St. John’s Restaurant (Downtown): The gold standard for fine dining in Chattanooga. The service is impeccable, and the menu changes seasonally. It’s elegant without being stuffy.
- Easy Bistro & Bar (West Village): Located in a historic bottling plant, this is the spot for seafood and oysters. The interior is gorgeous, and the cocktails are some of the best in the city.
2. Casual & Cool
Great atmosphere, better food, no tie required.
- Main Street Meats (Southside): Part butcher shop, part restaurant. Their house burger is arguably the best in the city (and maybe the state). It’s a small space with big energy.
- Tremont Tavern (North Shore): A legendary neighborhood pub. It’s loud, it’s busy, and the walls are covered in music memorabilia. Grab a burger and a local beer here to feel like a true Chattanoogan.
- Taco Mamacita (North Shore): “Peruvian Chicken” tacos. That’s all you need to know. This is a fun, high-energy spot that is great for families or groups of friends.
3. Breakfast & Brunch
Fuel up before house hunting.
- Niedlov’s Bakery & Café (Southside): You’ve probably eaten their bread at other restaurants in town, but visiting the bakery is a must. The lines can get long on Saturday mornings, but the Cruffins and breakfast sandwiches are worth the wait.
- Bluegrass Grill (Southside): A family-run staple. It’s cozy and smells like fresh biscuits. They don’t take reservations, so get there early!
- State of Confusion (Southside): Great for brunch on the patio. They have a massive outdoor area with games, making it a perfect spot to hang out when the weather is nice.
4. The “Chattanooga Classics”
You can’t live here without trying these.
- Champy’s Famous Fried Chicken (MLK Blvd): The 40s on hand, the tamales, and the fried chicken are iconic. It’s a fun, rowdy, delicious experience.
- Tony’s Pasta Shop & Trattoria (Bluff View Art District): Located in the Arts District, you can eat fresh pasta while overlooking the Tennessee River. It feels like you are on vacation in Europe.
- Clumpies Ice Cream Co.: Handcrafted in Chattanooga. With locations on the North Shore, Southside, and St. Elmo, you are never too far from a scoop of “Firecracker” or “Cookies and Cream.”
